What is expected of me if I participate in this study?
Participate in all scheduled therapy sessions.
Complete all interviews.
Complete all study questionnaires.
Complete the opinion interview if you are selected for participation.
Ask questions as you think of them.

What if I still want to see a therapist after I complete the treatment portion of the study?
Veterans wishing to receive continuing mental health care may find it available through their local VA. Your study provider or study staff may be able to help connect you with local services that fit your needs.
You will continue to participate in your SUD treatment during and after the study treatment. Your study participation won’t impact your SUD treatment in any way.

What if this treatment doesn't feel right for me but I still want to see a therapist?
For Veterans who discontinue study treatment prior to completion, the study team will try to connect you with mental health services available through local VA providers.

How will I communicate with the team & attend appointments?
Therapy sessions will occur in person or via an approved VA video platform.
Interviews will be conducted via a secure video platform.
You will receive phone calls, e-mails, mailings, and/or text messages from study staff members.
You may receive postcards and other mailings to thank you for your study participation between your scheduled assessments.

Will my information be protected?
Yes! Your study materials will be labelled only with a random number. Only a few people on the study team know the link between your study number and name. All study materials are kept on secure VA servers or in locked VA offices.

Will I have to pay or be paid for participating?
What are the costs to me if I take part in this study?
Generally, there are no costs for participating in this study.
If you have insurance copayments for your VA care you may be responsible for those costs for the PTSD therapy appointments.

Will I receive any payment if I participate in this study?
You will be compensated up to $575 if you complete all survey questionnaires and clinical interviews:
$80 for Baseline (interview = $55, survey = $25)
$100 for 4-week interview and survey (interview = $75, survey = $25)
$125 for 16-week interview and survey (interview = $90, survey = $35)
$130 for 28-week interview and survey (interview = $95, survey = $35)
$140 for 40-week interview and survey (interview = $100, survey = $40)
You can also earn an extra $20 for each interview above if you keep your original appointment time or reschedule more than 24 hours in advance
You will receive an additional $50 if you are selected for and complete a qualitative interview

Are there any risks or benefits involved?
What are the potential risks or discomforts that people may experience if they participate in the study?
Some of the topics might be difficult to talk about.
The survey/interview might make you feel uncomfortable.
While the researchers will keep study-related information including audio/video recordings as confidential as possible, complete confidentiality cannot be guaranteed.
Insurance co-payments may be necessary.

Are there potential benefits to participating?
All eligible Veteran participants will be randomized to a top tier, individual talk therapy known to improve PTSD symptoms.
PTSD treatment may help you meet your SUD treatment goals.
Many Veterans who receive PE report improvements in quality of life and functioning.
Some participants may find participating in the research assessment interesting.
Your participation will help contribute to knowledge that will be used to improve treatment for other Veterans with PTSD and SUD.

What happens if I want to discontinue participation?
Participation is completely voluntary!
You can decide to no longer participate in this study at any point.
